Getting your roof ready for winter should be an important item on your to-do list. Your roof provides protection agains the elements so it’s important to maintain it year round.
Clean your gutters of any leaves or debris. Clean gutters allow for proper water flow and prevent ice and snow from building up in your gutters.
Check your roof for any loose or missing shingles. Replace them so your home doesn’t get water or ice damage.
Repair flashing if it has become warped or loose. Improper flashing allows snow and ice to freely enter your roof. If too much excess moisture builds up, you’re looking at an interior leak.
Check your attic ventilation. Attic ventilation that is poor ventilated or insulated can expose your roof to more direct winter elements allowing ice dams to form.2
Remove any snow from your roof immediately. The weight of built up snow can cause your roof to collapse.
Replace sealant. If your roof has antennas, plumbing stacks or brick stacks, you should check the sealer around the bases of these features. Sealer and caulk will wear over time, so protect your roof by replacing any sealant that has become cracked or worn out.
